In 2020, in response to a challenge from fellow photographers to make an image on every day of the leap year, I resolved to make the Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary my subject. The resulting images are made in the Pictorialist tradition, capturing the feeling of the place throughout the seasons.
The Sanctuary is a 250 acre preserve protecting the watershed of Somes Pond, home to alewives, eels and loons. What first captivated me about the Sanctuary is the small island at the center of the pond, which is visible from the road and resembles nothing so much as a schooner.
